Every business that competes on a global scale must have access to an efficient and affordable logistics system in place to operate successfully. What began on the battlefields of ancient Greece has become one of the most popular and lucrative careers in the business community. But logistics is much more than a simple system or strategy, it has grown into a global industry.

At present, the transportation logistics industry is one of the world’s largest employers. Every worker who is involved in packaging or transporting goods or services is a part of the industry. At the very top is the logistics manager. It is his job to keep track of products at every leg of the supply chain.

In the warehouse, the manager must keep a close eye on inventory levels. He will review all sales data, so that he knows when to place new orders and restock the inventory. Computers and specialized software has simplified some of these essential tasks, but the manager of a global corporation must always keep his eye on the ball. One simple mistake could cost the company millions.

How does one become a logistics manager? Many of the top managers have earned their degrees in science, often the in statistics or logistics. Those that continue their studies to increase their marketability often do so by earning a master’s degree in logistics

After school, most young logisticians apply for jobs in industries that rely on complex delivery systems. Both the banking and pharmaceutical industries offer employees challenging, high-paying positions in logistics. Oftentimes new workers will be expected to continue their training by completing a certification in transportation and logistics.

As in many hands-on careers like engineering and architecture there is no substitute for real world experience. Working for a transportation company for a few weeks will often teach a student more than he could learn in an entire semester in the classroom. But before a student can secure a job at a transportation company, he or she must have an impressive resume.

Though it is a growing field that has been an important part of global business for over sixty years there are not many formal logistic educational programs offered to students. That may be why most students come to the field from different educational backgrounds. But if you are certain that you want to be a logistician who works for a transport company, it is imperative that you get the right education.

Earning a B.A. in transportation and logistics management is the most specific program of study a student can complete. It will immediately set you apart from the other candidates, many of whom will have bachelor degrees in either science or business.
